We were engaged to perform the repairs and rejuvenation of one of North Sydney’s most important heritage listed buildings. The structure was originally a part of what was before St. Leonard’s Public School in 1878. Due to the deterioration of the balcony’s timber structure with the original decking, posts and joists supporting the awning were rotted.
Our client NSW Heritage Council wanted the original fabric to be retained and the damage be repaired according to the heritage council’s details and instructions. The balcony’s original framing of hardwood bearers and posts were retained. We cleaned the existing deteriorated joists and left them in place and used special detailing to lay new joists between those joists.
We cut out the rotted bases of the posts with new bases absorbed in galvanised base plates to increase their life. At last, we replaced the traditional iron lace balustrade using traditional forging techniques to bring up the balcony according to the current code compliance.
