First, A Definition Is In Order
A public infrastructure project is anything that is designed to benefit the daily lives of the public, including roads, bridges, dams, and aqueducts. These projects generally involve immense budgets that can only really be provided by the government, though some private entities are also capable of completing public-facing projects.
Private entities usually focus on in-house infrastructure projects, however. For instance, an airport, which is a private entity, still needs to maintain the tarmac and taxi lanes, as well as any private roads or transportation leading to the terminal. While it is highly likely that the general public will make use of these facilities, they are still private infrastructure projects.
Making Mountains Out Of Mole Hills
Completing an infrastructure project can be as simple as collecting some dirt in the corner of a room and making a small mound, or you might be tasked with building a figurative mountain out of nothing but styrofoam. Jobs such as repairing roads or building pipelines are rarely any more complicated than most residential or commercial construction tasks, requiring teams of about the same size to successfully complete. However, infrastructure projects can also quickly balloon out in size beyond recognisability, and tasks such as building a dam cannot be completed by a small team of construction professionals and will instead require a massive undertaking.
Fundraising
Of course, finding the funds for such large jobs can be difficult. With the scope of some public jobs, even governments can struggle to reach the necessary funding targets, and private entities may find it difficult to reach their goals for any one of hundreds of reasons. Fortunately, it is not uncommon to see private entities enter partnerships with the government, be it on a local, state, or federal level, to fund infrastructure projects that everyone can benefit from. This can result in semi-privatised infrastructure that either provides funding to the government or is made available to the public at a subsidised cost, making life simpler for the citizenship.
